PASEO Project 2023
Taos, New Mexico
In September, 2023, I was honored to be included in the PASEO Project in Taos, NM. That meant that we kept the historic Stables Gallery open at night so folks attending the evening events of PASEO could also see my show Pirates of the Purple Sage.
At the same time, we projected my newly-finished film, The Burial of Natty Bumppo, on the exterior wall of the Stables Gallery. The 28-minute film ran on a loop all evening along with my 5-minute film from 1975, Roll’em Lola.
Here are some shots of Natty Bumppo at the Stables during PASEO.

Inside the gallery, visitors saw Fantasy Portraits alongside charcoal drawings.
Also included in the show were some of my Dreamtime Faces.
For the two nights of PASEO, people moved between animated films projected on the historic architecture of the Stables Gallery and two-dimensional art displayed on the gallery walls inside.
A few days later, we were pleased to read this comment in the Taos News:
“If there’s such a thing as a winner or best-in-show of Paseo, it would have to be The Burial of Natty Bumppo, a projected hand-drawn cel animation done by Fred Burns that took 40 years to complete. The 25-minute long animated film required about 28,000 drawings and the help of digital tools to restore some of the art. The images are colorful, mesmerizing, and beautiful, a delight for any fan of traditional animation.”
