Dreamtime Personalities

The show will feature two paintings from my series of Dreamtime Faces, The Lady and The Woodsman, alongside new sculptures by Bruce Backer and Vanessa Marootian Backer.

These sculptures explore the mysteries of the forest in the dark, those imagined figures and creatures that frighten and inspire us at night. They are both scary and celebratory. They fascinate and alarm us. They are from the dreamtime.

My Dreamtime Faces are painted from live models but they are not portraits. I see them more as landscapes, dreamy terrains that your eye can travel over slowly, almost as if you’re flying over someone’s face in a dream. When you stand close to these paintings you can feel that there’s an entire landscape in a face. The giant scale of these heads offers a portal to enter the dreamtime.
